Thy Kingdom Come - The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us Part 3

This sermon is the third in a series on the Lord’s Prayer given at Holy Trinity - Chatham by the Rev David Hyman on January 29th, 2012. It examines the phrase, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

It is my experience that as Americans, many of us have an innate, knee-jerk reaction to the word kingdom. It’s almost genetic, as if it is in our DNA to reject or be skeptical of the idea of monarchy. I am certain this is because our country is extremely proud that its history began with the overthrow of a king, and that no sovereign has ruled our land since. Indeed, we love democracy and I dare say our national history doesn’t help us much here as we come to this word kingdom.
