Episode 5: Re-tuning our Hearts to Lenten Hymns with Ben Bowman

What do we do with joyful songs when we aren’t feeling joyful? Deacon Ben Bowman brings his original compositions of two traditional Lenten hymns, "Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah" and "O God be Merciful to Me," which are often more upbeat, but he has set them to slower and more solemn music to encourage us to find rest in God in both our shouts of joy and cries of laments. Between these two hymns in the episode is our conversation about Ben's approach to rewriting hymns as a Lenten practice and his prayerful understanding of music as worship to God in both our happiness and sadness. Enjoy!
