Psalm 126 is a communal lament. It’s sung by people who are hurting, sorrowful, and afraid. It is a prayer that engages their pain, encourages them to hope, and seeks to build up their faith.
As Mt. Zion cannot be removed, so it will be for you. You will be immovable, forever. As the mountains surround that great holy city, so the LORD will surround you from this time forth and forevermore.
Psalm 124 celebrates the reality that God has been a help in ages past. 1) It imagines what would have happened had he not come to the rescue, 2) it acknowledges that he did help, and 3) that becomes the rocket fuel for the psalmist’s praise of God, it sends him through the atmosphere, to the highest heights of worshiping God.
Servants of God rely on God for mercy. This Sunday we consider how Psalm 123 teaches us this truth.
